Frequently Asked Questions
What is the BCTF Employee Health and Wellness (HW) Program?
The BCTF Employee HW Program is a voluntary program supporting employees who need help with staying well at work or returning to work, and implementing self-care strategies to manage a medical condition.
Who funds the program?
The program is funded through the Salary Indemnity Plan (SIP).
Who is eligible to participate?
Any BCTF employee contributing to SIP can participate, including TSU and TFEU members.
How does the program work?
The program connects you with a Health and Wellness Consultant who is experienced in working with people who are absent from work or struggling to stay at work. They are experienced in working with people with a wide range of reasons for being absent. They work with you and your general practitioner (GP), if you would like, to help put together a plan to support you while you are off; help connect you with treatment providers (e.g., counsellors, physiotherapists); and can also help to work with Human Resources (HR) and the Accommodation Committee to develop a return-to-work plan when you are ready. The consultant checks in with you along the way to see how things are going and to see if there are any changes needed to your plan.
Can you provide examples of how this program might help me?
- An employee suffers a concussion in a car accident and is unable to work. The consultant works with the employee and their specialists to create a plan for assessment, treatment, recovery, and return-to-work planning.
- An employee experiences significant workplace and/or personal stress which causes them to use more sick leave than usual to manage their condition. The consultant works with the employee and their medical professional(s) to create a plan for assessment and treatment.
- An employee is diagnosed with a chronic medical condition which requires a medical accommodation. The consultant develops a plan with the employee and their medical professional(s) to help manage the employee’s medical condition. the consultant may be invited to an accommodation committee meeting to help the union and employer find an accommodation that will work for the employee.
How do I refer myself to the HW Program?
Submit the online self-referral form – found on this page or in the BCTF employee portal Health and Wellness section.
What happens to my information if I choose to participate?
Privacy and confidentiality are essential values of the program. Referrals are sent to the SIP Plan Administrator and Income Security Division (ISD) Director with only minimal contact information required. HR is not notified of your participation unless you choose to disclose.
A health and wellness plan is created by your consultant and shared only with you. With your consent, your consultant can share the plan with your GP and your care team.
The Plan Administrator will only receive confirmation reports of your participation, overall budget for consultant service and any specific requests for treatment costs beyond the coverage in your extended health benefit plan.
Who can I talk to if I need more information?
Contact the BCTF SIP Administrator confidentially at 604-871-1935 if you need more information about how the program works and how it might be helpful to you.
